Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
7.1% a year for October–December 2026. The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter; its office memorandum of 30 September 2026 kept them unchanged (checked 26 October 2026). Interest is compounded once a year.
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added to the account at the end of the financial year. This calculator assumes you deposit by 5 April, so the whole deposit earns interest for the year: ₹1,50,000 a year at 7.1% for 15 years grows to about ₹40.68 lakh.
How much can I deposit in PPF?
At least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in one go or in parts. The calculator warns you if the amount is outside that range.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without further deposits. Choose 20, 25 or 30 years to see the value if you keep depositing the same amount.
Is PPF tax-free?
The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free, and deposits can be claimed as a deduction under section 80C if you file under the old tax regime.
