Frequently asked questions
How is SIP return calculated?
Each instalment is treated as paid at the start of the month and grows at the yearly rate divided by 12, compounded monthly. With no step-up this is the standard formula: value = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months. 10,000 a month at 12% for 10 years gives about ₹23.23 lakh, of which ₹12 lakh is what you paid in.
What return should I expect from a SIP?
No one can say: mutual fund returns depend on the market and aren't guaranteed. Equity funds can lose money over short periods. Try a cautious rate and a hopeful one to see the range, and look at a fund's own past returns knowing they don't promise future ones.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose instalment goes up by a fixed percentage every year. With a 10% step-up, 10,000 a month becomes 11,000 a month in year two and 12,100 in year three. Small yearly increases make a large difference over long periods, which the table shows year by year.
Does the result include tax and fund charges?
No. It's a gross estimate. Fund expense ratios are already reflected in a fund's reported returns, but exit loads and capital gains tax on redemption aren't taken off here.
Is what I enter saved or sent anywhere?
Your last inputs are kept in this browser's local storage so they're there next time. Nothing is sent to a server; the sums run on your device.
SIP growth at 12% a year, 10,000 a month
The same monthly amount over longer periods, with no step-up. Most of the final value comes from returns in the later years, which is why starting early matters.
