What's new in Scrawlspace
Everything that's shipped in Scrawlspace, newest first: new tools, improvements and fixes.
New home page tool list, remove background, word counter and calculators
- The home page lists every tool at a glance: one panel per category, with PDF and image tools sorted under headings like Organize, Convert and Security, and a row of buttons to show just one category. Open
- Word Counter counts words, characters, sentences and reading time in English, Hindi and other languages, with top keywords and a character limit check. Open
- Case Converter turns text into UPPER, lower, Title or Sentence case, camelCase, snake_case, kebab-case and more, each with a copy button. Open
- Age Calculator gives your exact age in years, months and days on any date, such as an exam's cut-off date, plus your next birthday. Open
- Percentage Calculator works out percentages, percentage change, adding or removing GST and marks percentage, and shows the formula it used. Open
- Unit Converter covers length, weight, temperature, area (sq ft, gaj, cent, guntha, acre and more), volume, speed, time and data size. Open
- Remove Background no longer leaves holes in faces and clothes: it now always runs on the processor, which gets the cut-out right where the graphics card didn't. Person mode uses the full-precision model, a one-time download of about 26 MB. Open
- Remove Background's progress messages are plain: Getting ready, then Removing background, without technical details. Open
- Remove Background: cut out a person or object on your device and save it as a transparent PNG, or put it on white, light blue, any colour or a blurred copy of the photo, many at once. A white background is ready for passport and exam photos. Open
Sign PDF, Fill PDF Form, compress PDF to a size and JWT signing
- Fill PDF Form: type into a PDF's own form fields, tick boxes and pick options right on the page, see how many are answered and jump to the next empty one, then download it filled in, or locked so the answers can't be changed. Open
- Sign PDF: drop a PDF and the signature tool is ready. Type, draw or upload your signature, click where it goes and download the signed file. Open
- Edit PDF shows its name and a short guide before you open a file. Open
- Compress PDF has a Target size mode: pick 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or your own size and get the best quality that fits, with the exact byte count and text kept selectable when it can be. There are ready-made pages for each size. Open
- Image compression takes any target size in KB, plus an optional minimum for forms that ask for a range like 20–50 KB, and shows whether each result is inside it. Open
- Exam photo and signature sizes: a table of the photo and signature rules in the official notices for SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NEET, JEE, CUET, PAN and Passport Seva, with the compressor set to 20–50 KB. Open
- JWT Decoder & Encoder can now create and sign tokens with HS, RS, PS, ES or EdDSA, using a secret, a private key or a new key pair, show the public key as PEM, JWK and JWKS, and verify the token in one click. Open
- Page numbers and watermarks can be written in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada with Noto Sans, page numbers can use Indian digits, and you can write your own format such as "पृष्ठ {n} / {total}". Open
- Merge, Split, Remove Pages, Extract Pages and Organize keep the bookmarks and fillable form fields of the pages you keep; when merging, each file's bookmarks sit under one named after the file. Open
- Ads no longer load on the pages where you type secrets or open private documents: JWT, passwords, hashes, encoding, Protect, Unlock and Redact PDF, and your own whiteboard boards. Open
- Every page has its own link preview image with its name and what it does, so shared links show what they open.
- PDF file sizes count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, matching Compress PDF's target and the image tools.
- Redact PDF no longer leaves a hidden copy of a redacted page in the file when another page links to it, and Edit PDF now removes the original words of the lines you change instead of leaving them recoverable. Open
- OCR PDF now makes Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese text searchable and selectable in the PDF, not just copyable. Open
- Compress to a size now counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, as upload portals do, and shows each result's exact byte count. Photos keep good quality and are scaled down instead of turning blocky. Open
- Image to WebP now works in Safari and on iPhone, and converters say when an animated GIF, WebP or PNG keeps only its first frame. Open
- PDFs that only have usage restrictions (no open password) now work in Page Numbers, Watermark, Crop, Edit, Rotate, Split, Merge, Organize, Redact and OCR instead of coming out broken. Open
- Page Numbers lets you choose Helvetica, Times or Courier. Open
- Merge, Split, Remove, Extract and Organize keep the document's title and author, and links between the pages you keep still work. Open
- PDF to Word and PDF to Markdown no longer add a scanned page's picture as well as its OCR text. Open
- Image Resizer has Instagram 3:4 portrait and 1.91:1 landscape sizes, and YouTube 4K and Shorts thumbnail sizes. Open
- Hash Generator compares Base64 checksums exactly (hex still ignores case), the UUID inspector names variants as RFC 9562 does, Cron Explainer names the right six- and seven-field formats, and JWT Decoder says Not expired instead of Valid when it hasn't checked a signature. Open
- A privacy page sets out what stays on your device, the few things that do go over the network and why, and what the ads and visitor counts collect. Open
- An About page explains who makes Scrawlspace, how the tools work without uploading your files, and how it stays free. Open
- The home page no longer says nothing is tracked: your files are never uploaded, but the site does show Google ads and count visits, and now says so.
- A mistyped or old link now shows a Page not found page with every tool listed, instead of quietly opening the home page.
- The home page says what the tools are in its heading, shows them before the story, and answers common questions, including how to check that nothing is uploaded. Open
- Image converters are named with "to" instead of an arrow (HEIC to JPG, SVG to PNG), and tool guides can show tables and link straight to the next tool. Open
- Every tool page has a fuller guide: what the tool keeps and loses, limits, reference tables, and links to the natural next step. Tool headings now name the job, such as Compress Image to 50KB or Unix Timestamp Converter. Open
- Guides that overstated what a tool does are corrected, including PDF to Word's formatting, YouTube thumbnail sizes, Indian passport photos, the password length advice and the cron formats. Open
Site icon in search results
- Scrawlspace's icon now has the PNG and .ico versions that Google search results and older browsers look for, so it can show next to the site name instead of a blank globe.
Compress to a size, passport photos, quick converters and tool guides
- Compress an image to a file size: pick 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB and each image is saved at the best quality that fits, shrinking only if it has to. There are ready-made pages for 20, 50, 100 and 200 KB. Open
- Passport Size Photo, YouTube Thumbnail and Instagram Post pages open the resizer at the right size, so a photo is cropped to fit as soon as you drop it in. Open
- Quick converters: PNG to JPG, JPG to PNG, WebP to JPG, WebP to PNG, AVIF to JPG and HEIC to PNG, each converting in bulk with nothing uploaded. Open
- Every PDF, image and developer tool, plus the JSON Viewer and CSS Formatter, now has a short guide below it: how to use it, answers to common questions, and links to related tools. Scroll past the tool to read it. Open
- Tool pages open faster: most pages download about a third less before they appear (the PDF tools list about three quarters less), and go straight from the page outline to the tool without a loading screen in between. Open
Board templates and live cards, QR codes, HEIC to JPG
- HEIC → JPG: convert iPhone photos to JPG in bulk, in any browser. Nothing is uploaded, and location and camera details are left out. Open
- QR Code Generator: codes for links, text, Wi-Fi logins, email, phone, SMS and contact cards, with your colours, rounded or dot styles and a logo in the middle. Download PNG or SVG, or copy the image. Open
- Image Resizer has size presets for Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, passport photos and screens. Passport sizes save at 300 dpi so they print at the right size. Open
- iPhone HEIC photos now open in every image tool and in Scan to PDF and JPG to PDF in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, not just Safari. Open
- Four new board templates: Retro (with a timer and a dot vote ready to go), Kanban, User story map and Mind map. Start one from the boards screen, or search "new retro board" in Ctrl+K. Open
- Diagram cards: write Mermaid (flowcharts, sequence, state, ER, Gantt, mind maps and more) and see it drawn in the board's hand-drawn style as you type. Pasting Mermaid onto a board makes one. Open
- Timer cards: a countdown everyone in a live session sees, with quick presets and +1 min, and a chime when time's up.
- Dot vote cards: everyone spreads a few dots over the options, with results you can hide until you reveal them.
- Comment cards: a thread of replies with names and times that you can resolve when it's settled. Replies and votes sent at the same moment by different people are all kept.
- Cursor chat: in a live session, press / to type a short message that appears at your cursor for everyone in the room.
- Export a board as SVG or PDF as well as PNG, from the board menu.
- Search engines and link previews now see each page's heading, description and links to every tool, even before the app loads, so tools are easier to find on Google. Open
- Scrawlspace now shows Google ads to help keep it free. Google may set cookies to choose and measure ads; your boards and files still never leave your browser unencrypted.
Board sync, API variables, command palette and more
- Sync: your boards follow you to your other browsers and devices, with no account. Turn it on from the boards screen and open the sync link on another device. Everything is end-to-end encrypted, and edits made on two devices are merged. Open
- Accessibility: secondary text and the light theme's accent colour now meet WCAG AA contrast, every page has a main landmark for screen readers, menus work with the arrow keys, and animations stop moving when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Send to board: JSON Viewer, Diff Checker, CSS Formatter and JWT Decoder can put their output on a new or recent board as a code card, right beside what's already there. Open
- Code cards highlight diffs: removed lines in red, added lines in green.
- Favourite tools: star any tool on the hub, in search results, on the PDF, image and developer indexes, or in the Ctrl+K palette. Favourites get their own row on the hub and come first in the palette. Open
- Every tool now has its own page title, description and link preview, so shared links show what they open and search engines can find each tool.
- Variables cards for API requests: write {{baseUrl}} or {{token}} in a URL, header or body. Values that look like secrets stay masked.
- Chain requests: name an API card, then use its last response in another one, e.g. {{login.body.data.token}} or {{login.status}}. A preview line shows the filled-in URL or what's missing.
- Copy as curl fills in variables, and the API workspace template shows a two-step chain. Open
- Press Ctrl+K (⌘K on Mac) on any page to jump to a tool, utility or board, or run a quick action like New board.
- This release log, so you can see what changed since your last visit.
- Diff Checker colours JSON in the compare view. Open
- The hub and the PDF, image and developer indexes group tools by type.
- CSS Formatter no longer squashes repeated spaces inside quoted strings, such as content: "a b". Open
