Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to an editable Word document?

Open the PDF here and click Download .docx. The text is rebuilt as real paragraphs and headings you can edit, not as a picture.

Will the formatting stay the same?

Text, headings, bold and italic, font sizes, lists, links, tables and photos come across as editable content. Fonts, colours, text alignment, drawn shapes and charts, and page headers and footers are not kept. Single-column documents convert best.

What happens to multi-column layouts?

Text is read across the page line by line, so on two-column pages, such as newsletters and research papers, lines from the two columns can be interleaved. Expect to fix those pages by hand.

Are images and charts kept?

Photos and other embedded pictures are kept. Charts, diagrams and shapes drawn as vector graphics are dropped. To keep a chart, save that page with PDF to JPG and insert it in Word.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

A scanned page has no text layer, so it is added to the document as a picture. Run OCR PDF first to get text; the converted page then holds the scan picture followed by the recognised text, so delete the picture if you only want the text.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, using its password, then convert the unlocked copy.

Is it safe to convert PDF to Word online here?

Yes. The conversion happens in your browser and the PDF is never uploaded.

What converts well, and what doesn't

Works best on PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or a browser, such as reports, letters and resumes. For tables you want to calculate with, PDF to Excel gives a spreadsheet instead.
