Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The PDF, image, JSON, diff, CSS, text and developer tools and the calculators run in your browser, so your files and what you type stay on your device. The privacy page lists the few things that do go over the network, such as OCR's one-time language download.

How can I check that nothing is uploaded?

Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and use a tool: you'll see no upload. Or load a tool, turn on airplane mode, and it keeps working.

Is it really free? Why?

Yes, with no account, no watermark and no daily limit. Your own device does the work, so each extra file costs Scrawlspace nothing; Google ads on the site cover the hosting.

Is there a file size or page limit?

No limit is set. Very large files are bounded only by your device's memory, so a phone may struggle with a 500-page scan that a laptop handles.

Does it work on a phone or offline?

Yes. Every tool works in a mobile browser, and Scan to PDF uses your phone's camera. Install Scrawlspace from the browser menu and it opens and works without a connection.

What can I do with it?

Edit, merge, compress and convert PDFs in the PDF tools; compress, resize and convert photos in the image tools, including compress to 50 KB for form uploads; decode JWTs and generate hashes in the developer utilities; count words with the word counter and work out an exact age, percentages and units in the calculators; format JSON and compare text with Diff Checker; and sketch with others on the whiteboard.
