Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It can't bring back detail the JPG already lost, but it stops any further loss when you edit and re-save.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so photos often get several times larger. Use PNG for lossless editing, not for small files; for a small file, convert back with PNG to JPG or use the image compressor.

Will the background become transparent?

No. JPGs have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove the background in an image editor afterwards if you need it.

Does it remove EXIF and location data?

Yes. The PNG is redrawn from the pixels, so camera details and GPS location in the JPG aren't copied.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.

When converting to PNG is worth it

When it isn't

For sharing, email or upload forms, keep the JPG: the PNG is bigger and looks the same. If a form needs a smaller file, compress to 50 KB instead.
