Frequently asked questions
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. It's often much smaller than JPG, so many websites serve it, and some phones can save photos as AVIF. Some apps and older systems can't open it.
Why won't my AVIF convert?
Your browser needs to be able to read AVIF. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all can; older versions may not.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. To keep them, convert to WebP or PNG with the image compressor by choosing that Output format.
Will the JPG be bigger?
Usually, since JPG compresses less efficiently. Lower the Quality slider for smaller files.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
What is lost when converting AVIF to JPG
HDR and 10-bit colour: the JPG is standard 8-bit, so very bright highlights look flatter.
Animation: an animated AVIF keeps only its first frame.
Transparency: filled with white.
Metadata: EXIF and location data aren't copied.
When to keep AVIF
On your own website, AVIF is usually the smallest file at good quality, so there's no need to convert. To make AVIF files from JPG or PNG, use Image to AVIF. For a form with a KB limit, set a Target file size here or use compress to 100 KB.
